Fragmentation
Statement Of Intent:
My chosen theme is Fragmentation. I have chosen this because I like the variety within it, with the ability to take pictures of different things like humans, objects and places and then vary it by the fragments which change something whether it's the emotions or colours to display feelings or represent time. There is so much to photograph and venture in this theme which is what I really like. Research I intend to carry out based on this theme consists of an assortment of photographers by the likes of Alex Hyner, David Seidner and Marilyn Henrion. I have chosen these three photographers as they all focus on different aspects of fragmentation, such as Seidner doing portraits often to express emotions, or Henrion working with buildings and representing diversity and varieties, and Hyner working with the sky in a lot of his work and the variation within the colours which help represent time and change.
These little things they focus on are all things I would like to research and perfect within my own work and edits later down the line. I want to do this because I feel as though there are different varieties in what can be displayed and how different viewers can see it and interpret it as, Shoots I want to look into is Hyner’s selection of his sky images and Henrion’s “Patchwork City” series. Photoshoots I intend to complete during this project to help explore fragmentation are a trip to Salford Quays, which I have previously travelled to for previous projects, but this time to focus more on the landscape as a whole and skyline and the changes throughout the day. I also intend to do more work from home and a shoot at home throughout the day using different views of sunrise and sunsets to help also capture the changes in the day and through time. I would also like to do some work similar to that of Hyner and his work with power lines, so a shoot in that could be interesting to complete and fun to edit. I would also like to do simpler shoots in school with peers similar to the work of Seidner and his displays of emotions through his portraits.
Techniques I would like to use with the camera is time lapse or a slower shutter speed, I could also work with tripods and other equipment. On photoshop I could use different overlay settings and the cutting/selecting tool to help with the fragmentation part of it. During this project I hope to learn more about the variety in fragmentation and explore it and work in the different subsections and focus on different things from people to objects etc. I also hope to learn more about photoshop and tools i can use on edits to make them easier and simpler. I also would like to learn more about the variation in colour and variety of emotions in that aspect, similar to what i did with light and dark but straying away from the more black and white aspect of things and going deeper with my work and intentions behind it, having ways to link it back to me and my own personal expressions and preferences in photography. This links to my final format being as widespread as the topic of fragmentation with different aspects of this project explored to my fullest potential, with the assortments of portraits and skylines and powerlines to convey different things within emotion and time and to really convey that through my final pieces.
